Rise Again: Seize Fresh Starts, Embrace New Chances

IT’S that time of year when schools reopen for a new academic session. Most primary and secondary schools have either resumed or are about to resume, while many universities are also reopening for a new session or semester. There is an aura of ‘newness’ everywhere.

This ‘newness’ points to a fresh beginning—a new hope, an opportunity to do better, to prove yourself again.

Some students had a poor start; their results in previous years were disappointing. Does that mean they can never recover? No!

I have seen students once labelled ‘dullards’ rise to become the best in their classes. I have witnessed remarkable transformations at different levels. These experiences have taught me always to give students multiple chances. A single second chance may not be enough; some pick up at the third, fourth, fifth or even sixth attempt.

As a parent or guardian, don’t give up yet on that young boy or girl. Beyond financial support, they need more—moral support, prayers, encouragement, and constant reminders that they can succeed. They have the ability to shine.

Dear young man or woman, failure in the past does not mean you must continue to fail. You have what it takes to excel. Don’t remain in failure—that is not who you are. You are a shining star; you are a wonder.

If you need to speak with someone, please do. Do not keep everything bottled up; there are responsible people who are genuinely interested in seeing you rise. Reach out to them. Speak up; reach out.

I am interested in your rising.

I am your friend,
