What was meant to be a night of triumph for MC Alger ended in sorrow, as the team’s Algerian Ligue 1 title win was overshadowed by a fatal barrier collapse at the 5 July Stadium, which claimed three lives and left more than 70 fans injured.

Stonix News reports that the incident occurred on Saturday, June 21, after a goalless draw with NC Magra sealed MC Alger’s second consecutive league title.
A security railing in the stadium’s upper tier gave way, causing fans to fall into the lower section.

According to the Algerian Ministry of Health, 38 injured individuals were taken to Beni Messous University Hospital, 27 to Ben Aknoun, and 16 to Bab El Oued. The injuries ranged from broken bones to life-threatening trauma.

Among the victims was supporter Younes Amguzzi. MC Alger issued a heartfelt tribute: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of our supporter Younes Amguzzi.”

In response to the tragedy, players and staff lined up to donate blood, and the title ceremony was postponed. President Abdelmadjid Tebboune expressed his condolences, describing the event as a “national tragedy.”

The incident has sparked serious concerns over the safety of the 64,200-capacity stadium, which had once been earmarked for an expansion to hold 80,000 spectators.
