Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

Some yet-to-be-identified gunmen have killed a lecturer at the University of Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria, Prof. Opeyemi Isaac Ajewole.

Ajewole was suspected to have been assassinated by suspected hired killers while returning to his residence at Orogun near UI, Monday night.

Amid sketchy details, sources said he was shot in his car while on his way home outside the university campus, even as the gunmen also made away with his car.

Another source said he was attacked by some armed gang as he was about to enter his compound.

“I think he struggled with them, and he was shot and forced into his vehicle.

“They drove away and dropped his lifeless body at Oyo Road between Deeper Life School and Gastap Petrol Station. Police claimed it was a case of assassination.”

Principal Assistant Registrar, Public Communications, at the university, Joke Akinpelu, has confirmed the incident to journalists on Tuesday, saying the incident occurred Monday night.

Until his death, Prof. Ajewole, whose remains have been taken to UI Anatomy, was a Professor of Social and Environmental Forestry at the Department of Forest Resources Management, University of Ibadan.

Born on March 6, 1962, Ajewole started his academic career as Lecturer II in 2002.

The university management has yet to officially respond to the tragic incident.
