B-R-E-A-K-I-N-G: NLC Directs Osun LG Workers To Stay At Home Over Political Tension

Seun Ajanaku, Reporting

OSOGBO – The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed local government workers to stay at home from Monday, February 17, 2025, amid fears of a possible breakdown of order following plans by former local government officials to resume office.

The directive, issued in a statement signed by the NLC chairman in the state, Comrade Christopher Arapasopo, was made available to newsmen in Osogbo on Sunday 16th February, 2025.

The union cited growing political tension in the state, leading to agitation and fear among its members working in local government areas.

“The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has noticed the political uproar bringing agitations and fear among our members working within the Local Government Areas across the state,” the statement read. “The NLC is apolitical, but we won’t allow our members to work in an atmosphere of insecurity.”

The crisis stemmed from the sacking of local government chairmen elected under the administration of former Governor Adegboyega Oyetola by the incumbent Governor Ademola Adeleke.

The former officials, emboldened by a recent Court of Appeal verdict in Akure, Ondo State, reportedly plan to return to their offices, a move that has heightened political uncertainty.

Governor Adeleke had earlier called on President Bola Tinubu (during a press conference and posted on his X handle) to intervene, urging him to call the Minister for Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Adegboyega Oyetola, to order.

The governor accused Oyetola, who’s President Tinubu’s cousin, of allegedly directing the sacked officials to resume duties, a development that could lead to a clash of interests.

As the political standoff continues, the NLC’s stay-at-home directive aims to prevent local government workers from being caught in any potential violence.

The union emphasised its commitment to safeguarding the welfare and security of its members amid the ongoing dispute.

Residents and stakeholders in Osun State now await further development as the situation unfolds.
