Boko Haram Abduct Catholic Priest, Others In Borno

A Catholic priest, Rev. Alphonsus Afina, who recently returned from the United States of America, has been abducted by extremists alongside other travellers in northeastern Borno state.

According to church officials, the incident occurred on June 1 near Gwoza, close to the Cameroon border, when the priest was travelling from Mubi to Maiduguri for a workshop.

Bishop John Bogna Bakeni of Maiduguri informed The Associated Press that Afina’s convoy was ambushed by the Islamic extremist group Boko Haram while awaiting clearance at a military checkpoint.

He said, “There were many fatalities and abductions. One member of the JDPC was shot dead.

“Father Alphonsus was abducted along with others, and one of the staff of the JDPC was able to escape to safety.”

Father Alphonsus is the 15th religious minister to be kidnapped in the country since the beginning of the year, 2025.
