BREAKING: Former President Muhammadu Buhari Dies in London at 81

NIGERIA is mourning the passing of one of its most prominent political figures, former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died this afternoon in a private clinic in London. He was 81 years old.

The announcement was made via social media by Bashir Ahmad, a former aide to the late president, and was formally confirmed in a statement signed by presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu.

“Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi raji’un. The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” the statement read.

Buhari, a retired Major General and one-time military Head of State (1983–1985), served two terms as Nigeria’s democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023. His presidency was marked by a strong stance against corruption, efforts to stabilise the economy, and a controversial war against insurgency.

His death comes as a shock to many Nigerians, even though he had retreated from the public eye since leaving office. Condolences and tributes have begun pouring in from across the country and around the world.

Further details regarding burial arrangements and national honours are expected to be announced by the Federal Government in the coming hours.
