Breaking: Mayhem in Sokoto, As Mob Set Ablaze Churches

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

There’s an ongoing mayhem in Sokoto following the gruesome killing of Miss Deborah Yakubu, a Christian student of Shehu Shagari College of Education Sokoto over alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammed.

A video sighted by our reporter on Facebook Saturday evening revealed thick smoke belching from a house across a street and a voice over disclosing the house to be that of the bishop.

Witnesses said one of the torched buildings was the Catholic Pastoral Centre.

The mob was said to have also succeeded in burning one of the vehicles that was parked at the centre.

In yet another video, a mob of young northern boys were seen molesting some ladies in the street with clubs and sticks as well as destroying people’s property and wares in shops.

In yet another video, a woman was seen being dragged out of the gate of a house and a man in blue jeans mauling her with a pestle and another with a whip.

Earlier, Governor Aminu Tambuwal had imposed a 24-hour curfew in Sokoto metropolis to halt the impending mayhem just as a mob is said to have invaded the palace of the Sultan of Sokoto to insist on the release of two suspects arrested in connection with the murder of Miss Yakubu on Thursday.

The governor announced the curfew during a statewide broadcast on Saturday.
