RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, widely known as the “Sleeping Prince,” has finally passed away after spending two decades in a coma.
Stonix News reports that the prince had remained unconscious since 2005, following a severe car accident during his time as a university student in London.
Despite extensive medical care and the unwavering hope of his family, his condition never improved significantly over the years.
News of his death was confirmed on Saturday and has drawn heartfelt tributes across the Kingdom and beyond.
“Prince Alwaleed bin Khalid bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud — known as the Sleeping Prince — has passed away after remaining in a coma for 20 years. Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” was the message posted on @LifeSaudiArabia on Friday at 6:02p.m.
Many took to social media to express condolences, remembering the royal family’s dedication and hope throughout his long medical battle.
“Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un” — Indeed, to God we belong and to Him we shall return — was widely shared in mourning of his passing.
Prince Alwaleed was the son of Prince Khalid bin Talal and the nephew of billionaire investor, Prince Alwaleed bin Talal.
His case had long captured public attention as a poignant symbol of endurance, family devotion, and hope in the face of immense tragedy.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the Royal Court.
