FG Approves ₦712.26 Billion For Full Rehabilitation Of Lagos Airport Terminal One

By Micheal Chukwuebuka

THE Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a ₦712.26 billion plan for the complete overhaul of Terminal One at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, a key part of a broader ₦900 billion national aviation infrastructure upgrade.

The approval was announced on Thursday following a FEC meeting presided over by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, disclosed that the contract has been awarded to China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC). The project will involve stripping the existing terminal down to its structural frame before rebuilding it with modern mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems.

“This is not a renovation, but a full-scale reconstruction of the terminal,” Keyamo stated, emphasizing that the overhaul aims to bring the facility in line with international standards.

In addition to Terminal One, FEC also approved the expansion of Terminal Two at MMIA, which includes construction of a new apron, access roads, bridges, and related infrastructure.

The combined cost of the Lagos airport-related projects now totals ₦712.26 billion, making it one of the largest single investments in Nigeria’s aviation sector in recent years.

As part of efforts to bolster security, the Council also approved a ₦49.9 billion perimeter fencing project for the airport. The 14.6-kilometer steel barrier will feature an integrated intrusion detection system, CCTV surveillance, solar-powered floodlights, and a patrol road.

Keyamo explained that the fence will be monitored by a new high-tech command center. “Anyone or anything close to the fence will be detected immediately, and the location pinpointed,” he said.
