IN a rare and emotional courtroom moment, a Georgia woman forgave and embraced the man who killed her husband in a hit-and-run.
Regina Johnson, in a video of the emotional court incident posted on Facebook, walked across the courtroom to hug Joseph Tillman, who admitted to fatally striking her husband, Chuck Johnson, while driving under the influence.
“I forgive you, and God loves you,” she told him. Tillman, visibly moved, whispered back, “I’m so sorry. I am so sorry.”
The presiding judge remarked that he had never witnessed such an exchange. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the wife of a victim hug the defendant who killed somebody,” he said.
Tillman pleaded guilty to charges including homicide by vehicle, DUI, and reckless driving.
He received a 20-year sentence, with prison time suspended if he successfully completes a two-year inpatient rehabilitation program.
Regina and Chuck Johnson had been married for 50 years.
