A grandmother who allegedly stabbed her 7-year-old granddaughter multiple times with a kitchen knife has been arrested and charged with attempted murder.
According to a source, policemen responded to a call in the Morrisania neighbourhood, Bronx, New York City, on Tuesday 21st, regarding a 7-year-old girl who had been stabbed multiple times by her own grandmother.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found the young girl, in a critical condition, lying on the bed of her apartment and was immediately taken to Lincoln Hospital.
A resident in the neighbourhood who saw the officers rushing out of the home with the victim told our source during an interview:
“The police officers came out running from where he was at with the little girl.
“The property that they have is a couple of houses away. So we have seen that he came out running.
“The cop car was right in front of my property. So he just put her right in the cop car. He didn’t wait for the ambulance,” the eyewitness, Ana Martinez said.
The suspect, a 65-year-old woman identified as Mariza Yauger, was taken into police custody and later arrested and charged with attempted murder, attempted manslaughter, assault, criminal possession of a weapon, reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child.
Another resident in the neighbourhood, China Aponte, a grandmother, lamented:
“I’m a grandmother myself. I just don’t even have words for it. My heart is broken. It is sad. Very sad.”
Meanwhile, a family member of the girl confirmed that she had undergone surgery and is recovering in the hospital.
The motive behind the heinous attack remains unclear.
