Gunmen have reportedly abducted four students of the Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, and five others yet to be identified.

The abductors have reportedly demanded N5 million as ransom to effect the release of the nine victims.

The victims, said to have recently written their final exams, were reportedly abducted along Abraka-Eku road, Ethiope East Local Government Area of the state last Saturday.

The names of the students kidnapped were given as Arogbo Harriet Seyifunmi, Azunobi Prosper, Miracle Etavbwobor Robert (all 500 level students of the Department of SLT Chemistry as well as Adegor Aghogho Hapiness, a 500 level student of Electrical Engineering.

The identities of the other five victims have not been ascertained.

Meanwhile, the DELSU Students Union Government (SUG) led the president, Comrade Solomon Mukoro, has condemned the abduction.

In a statement on Tuesday made available to journalists, the students described the abduction as a shame to both the security agencies and the state government.

“The alarming abduction of students is very shameful to the state government and security agencies; that they have done nothing to stop the recent attacks on students and citizens, after reports and official complains have been made about the Eku-Abraka expressway,” the statement read.

The students called on the Delta State government “to wake up, develop and deploy new strategies to deal with insecurity and kidnapping in the state, especially the recent kidnappings along Abraka-Eku expressway.”

They lamented that the lives of students of the institution are no longer safe if the trend is not arrested.

Comrade Mukoro, however, urged all students of DELSU to “remain calm and not endanger the lives of the kidnapped persons, as we are doing all we can to rescue the abducted students.

“We are in constant communication with the Police department and state DSS, and we are working together with them to save the abducted students in the shortest time possible.”

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Bright Edafe, when contacted by Stonix News, who initially feigned knowledge of the incident, later called to confirm it, adding that operatives of the command were closing in on them.
