By Micheal Chukwuebuka

The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has confirmed a security breach at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi (New), in Nasarawa State, which led to the escape of 16 inmates in the early hours of Tuesday.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the NCoS Public Relations Officer, Deputy Controller of Corrections Umar Abubakar, said some inmates attacked personnel on duty and compromised security at the facility, enabling the escape.

During the incident, five officers sustained varying degrees of injury, with two in serious condition and receiving urgent treatment at a government hospital.

Abubakar disclosed that seven of the escaped inmates have been recaptured and returned to custody.

The Controller General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, has visited the facility and ordered a full investigation into the incident. He warned that any staff found culpable would face disciplinary action and directed an immediate search operation in collaboration with other security agencies to apprehend the remaining fugitives.

Nwakuche urged members of the public to remain calm but vigilant and to report any suspicious movements or sightings of the escapees to the nearest security formation.

While preliminary investigations are ongoing, the NCoS reassured Nigerians of its commitment to public safety and the security of all custodial facilities nationwide.
