THE governor of Oyo State, Seyi Makinde, has expressed his continued joy in identifying with the University of Ibadan (UI) community.
The governor made this known during a courtesy visit to the Senior Staff Club of the university on Friday evening.
Governor Makinde shared a personal reflection, recalling how, during his 2019 election campaign—when he was being pursued all over the state and security was a major concern—he would often retreat to the Senior Staff Club at night to relax and unwind.
He appreciated the presence of the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, who was ably represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Peter Olapegba.
The governor also acknowledged and expressed gratitude to members of the Students’ Union and the Abadina community for their presence.
Delivering the welcome address, Professor Deji Omole remarked that the University of Ibadan is a “big tree with many branches”.
In his words: “Oyo State is the intellectual capital of Nigeria. I didn’t know until recently that even our College of Nursing was the first in Nigeria, established in 1979. Other nursing schools took their curriculum from Oyo State to establish their own.”

Professor Josiah Olusegun Ajiboye, in his remarks, described Governor Makinde’s visit as a rare privilege, noting that the governor is a major benefactor of the Senior Staff Club. He expressed hope for continued goodwill and visits from the governor.
Dr Femi Oyamakinde, President of the Senior Staff Club, also extended gratitude to Governor Makinde, stating:
“We are filled with profound gratitude for your consistent support for this club. Your generous contributions have gone a long way in upgrading the facilities we have here.”
In his closing remarks, Professor Olapegba reiterated the university’s appreciation, noting that Governor Makinde has always been a supporter of the university, even before assuming office.
“We are so lucky to have you,” he said. “The Secretary to the State Government, Professor Olanike Adeyemo, is from the University of Ibadan, and Professor Deji Omole, who is the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), is also a product of the University of Ibadan.”
“Mr Governor, thank you so much for all you are doing.”
