INTERNET fraudster, Omoghan Destiny Igbinosa, has been sentenced to jail by a federal high court in Warri, Delta State, for impersonating popular actor, Bolanle Ninalowa.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), in a statement on Monday, said the court passed the sentence on February 17.
Igbinosa was found guilty by the court on a separate one-count charge of impersonation and obtaining by false pretence.
The charge reads:
“That you, OMOGHAN DESTINY IGBINOSA sometime between 2021 and 2022 at Benin, Edo State, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did fraudulently impersonate the identity of NINALOWA BOLANLE, a Nollywood Actor by fraudulently sending document to one NEWON QUANON through the Internet which documents you claim emanated from the said NINALOWA BOLANLE with intent to gain advantage for yourself and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 22 (2) (b) (i) of the Cybercrime (Prohibition Prevention, etc.) Act 2015 and punishable under section 22 (2) (b) (IV) of the same Act.”
Igbinosa pleaded guilty to the charge upon arraignment.
The defence counsel, Dickson Egberume and A.J. Onwuanaje, pleaded with the court to temper justice with mercy.
The judge, Okon Abang, in his verdict, convicted and sentenced Igbinosa to two years imprisonment or a fine of one million naira.
He is to forfeit the sum of two thousand, two hundred and thirty-five US dollars ($2,235), and his mobile phone to the federal government.
