AN irate mob, on Tuesday, pulled down and smashed on the ground the statue of the former governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, erected at the Obi Akpor Local Government Area Secretariat in Port Harcourt.

The action is a continuation of the dispute over the expired tenure of elected local government chairmen and councillors.

The incident further underscored the deep-rooted acrimony between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Wike which began just three months after the former succeeded the latter as governor of Rivers State.

Stonix News reports that Governor Fubara had, Tuesday morning in a state broadcast, instructed the local government chairmen, who are believed to be loyal to Wike, to leave office as stipulated in the constitution.

But the expired chairmen and councillors had stuck to their guns on the grounds that the pro-Wike faction of lawmakers of the Rivers House of Assembly had extended their terms by six months, because Gov Fubara had failed to conduct local government elections.

In the broadcast on Tuesday, Governor Fubara ordered all the 23 LGA chairmen to hand over their positions to the Heads of Administration in their respective councils.

In a somewhat response to this directive, a significant number of youths, like a mob, gathered at LGA secretariats across the state to execute the order they were not empowered constitutionally to execute.

The fallen and destroyed statue

In Obi Akpor, where Wike had served two terms as chairman, an irate mob, in visible bile, vandalised a statue erected in his honour.

One protester in the viral video of the destruction, shouted, “No more Wike,” as the mob collectively uprooted the sculpture amid chants of “eshobey, hey.”

One other member of the mob picked up the hat on the head of the uprooted statue and smashed it on the tarred road.

Stonix News reports that there’s a sporadic protest across the state with police on hand to avert chaos and anarchy.
