A Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle on Thursday crashed into a church parade and left a pregnant woman and 20 other members battling for their lives along Aba-Owerri Road, Abia State, Nigeria.
The terrifying incident, which sent the 21 members of the United Evangelical Church to the State’s University Teaching Hospital, occurred around 6:00p.m on that day.
It was gathered that the accident happened when the pregnant woman and some members of the church’s Boys Brigade band were doing a sensitisation road walk about the International Women’s Day celebration.
It was learnt that many of the victims, including the pregnant woman, suffered broken legs, hands, and head injuries, while some others suffered other forms of internal injuries.
The pastor in charge of the church, Nnamdi Kelvin, who was weeping inside the hospital about the incident, said that the members were hit by the vehicle from behind, describing the incident as reckless and terrible.
Some of the injured persons, who spoke in deep pain to Daily Post, appealed to the Abia State government to save their lives by providing financial help to enable them to receive the needed medical help.
Four other victims have been rushed to an undisclosed private hospital by their relatives.
The driver of the Jeep, who allegedly blamed the accident on brake failure, has been arrested and handed over to the World Bank Police station, Abayi.
