JUST IN: Tragedy As Trailer Crushes FUL Lecturer In Lokoja


A tragic accident occurred on Wednesday evening at Felele, Lokoja, Kogi State, when a trailer crushed a lecturer from the Federal University of Lokoja (FUL).

The victim, identified as Dr (Mrs) Oluwakemi Mercy Emmanuel-Olownubi, a respected Theatre Arts lecturer, was confirmed dead at the scene of the accident.

The heartbreaking incident has,once again, raised public concern over the alarming rate of road accidents involving heavy-duty vehicles along the Felele axis of Lokoja.

Residents have continued to appeal to relevant authorities to take urgent steps to improve traffic safety measures in the area.

In an emotional tribute shared on the university’s official Facebook page, the institution confirmed the lecturer’s passing:

“It is with great pain in our hearts that we officially announce the passing of our Legend — the Mother of Theatre, Dr. (Mrs.) Emmanuel-Olownubi Oluwakemi Mercy.

Your impact, passion, and dedication to the world of theatre will forever remain in our hearts.

Rest in peace, our hero.

Your light will never fade. ️

May the Lord comfort the Department and strengthen us all in this difficult time. ”

Dr Emmanuel-Olownubi, fondly called ‘Mother of Theatre’ by her students and colleagues, was widely admired for her passion, mentorship, and artistic excellence in the Department of Theatre Arts. Her sudden death has thrown the entire university community into mourning.

Dr (Mrs) Oluwakemi Mercy Emmanuel‑Olowonubi was a Lecturer II in the Department of Theatre Arts at Federal University Lokoja (FUL) in Lokoja.

She held an M.A. in Performing Arts from University of Ilorin and her teaching and research interests included play-writing, theatre management, directing, dramatic theory & criticism, community theatre and gender/cultural studies.

She was a dedicated educator, shaping young minds through courses such as Dramatic Theories & Criticism, Gender Studies in Drama, Theatre Workshop & Performance, and Modern Drama.

Stonix News recalled that on 17 February 2025, a heavy-duty vehicle crashed into a shuttle bus carrying students of the Federal University Lokoja (FUL) along the same Felele axis in Lokoja, Kogi State, Nigeria.

The university management apparently acknowledged the deaths of students in the incident, and declared days of mourning and lowered flags at half-mast.

The university was reportedly shut down indefinitely following protests by students over the accident.

The road (Felele-Crusher highway) is flagged as accident-prone and the state assembly has moved motions to create alternative routes and regulate heavy vehicles there.
