Licences Revocation: NBC Extends Deadline For Indebted Media Stations To Shutdown

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) says it has extended the shutdown deadline handed 52 media stations to offset debts owed the commission.

Stonix News had reported that the NBC, on Friday, revoked the operating licences of African Independent Television (AIT), Sylverbird Television and 52 others over alleged indebtedness running into billions of naira.

The development had drawn the ire of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, the International Press Centre (IPC) as well as other bodies, asking the NBC to rescind its decision.

Extending the deadline, the Director General, NBC, Malam Balarabe Shehu, said the new deadline was now 6.00p.m of Tuesday, August 23, 2022.

The statement read thus:

*REVOCATION OF BROADCAST LICENSE: Matters Arising*

Following intervention of Concerned Groups and visible concerted efforts by some defaulting Licensees to offset their debts, the National Broadcasting Commission hereby serves this Notice of an extension of Deadline to Shutdown to 6.00PM on Tuesday August 23, 2022.
