NIGERIA’s Minister of Education, Olatunji Alausa, has suggested extending the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme from one year to two years.
Praising the digital transformation of the scheme, Alausa highlighted that the management of NYSC has significantly reduced certificate racketeering and forgery.
He made this statement on Friday during a meeting with Brigadier General Olakunle Nafiu, the newly appointed Director-General of NYSC, at his office in Abuja.
The minister also addressed the ongoing issue regarding the exemption of part-time OND graduates from the NYSC.
Further lauding the leadership of the scheme, Alausa proposed extending national service from one year to two years and expanding the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Training programme for Corps members.
“You have made great strides as an organisation. Let NYSC offer more opportunities to help individuals become job creators who can meet the country’s needs,” the minister remarked.
In response, the NYSC DG acknowledged that the minister has been instrumental in the achievements of the scheme.
He also suggested the creation of a database for Nigerian youths who travel abroad to pursue foreign degrees.
