FORMER world heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua has opened up about the profound grief of losing two close friends in a recent road traffic accident, saying the pain is even greater for their parents.
Joshua was involved in a collision on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on 29 December, which tragically claimed the lives of his companions, Sina Ghami and Latif Ayodele.
The boxer was extracted from the wreckage and taken to a Lagos hospital for treatment.
In a heartfelt post shared on his Instagram on Thursday, Joshua paid tribute to his late friends, expressing deep sorrow and reflecting on their character.
“Thank you for all the love and care you have shown my brothers,” he wrote. “I didn’t even realise how special they are. I’ll just be walking with them and cracking jokes with them, not even knowing God kept me in the presence of great men.”
He added, poignantly, “100% it’s tough for me, but I know it’s even tougher for their parents. I have a strong mind, and I believe God knows their hearts. May God have mercy on my brothers.”
Following the traumatic incident, there are unconfirmed reports that the 34-year-old athlete is contemplating retirement from professional boxing.
