Diary of a Teacher (DoT) with Titilope Ogundele

My Thrilling Encounter With Pet. Engineering Students At UI

TWO weeks ago, I had my first contact with one of the groups I teach the Use of English, GES 201, at the University of Ibadan. I teach 200-level Petroleum Engineering students.

When I saw the grouping and realised I would be teaching Petroleum Engineering students, I was curious. I was eager to meet my students; I wanted to know why they chose Petroleum Engineering as their course of study. Then, I felt it would be a class of brilliant students.

The first class was, quite, exciting for me. The students didn’t fall my hands; they were loaded. They are intelligent and ready to learn more. Their vibes made me pour myself out.

The class was, really, lively. I asked them questions, and they did their best to answer; they were not shy about making mistakes. When they gave wrong answers, we all laughed together and, then, I corrected them after the laughter.

They came with their questions, too, and I did my best to answer them. Yes, they were inquisitive.

At the end of the class, I felt fulfilled.

One of the female students came to me and said, “I love you, ma. I love female lecturers.” I smiled and told her I loved her too.

Before I left the class, about three students approached me and said, “Thank you, ma.” Outside the classroom, about two students also walked up to me and said, “Thank you, ma.”
