THE Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has issued a public apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Federal Government, and millions of Nigerians following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — a national disappointment that has triggered widespread calls for the leadership of Nigerian football to resign.
In an emotionally worded statement shared on X, the NFF described Sunday’s defeat to DR Congo in the Africa Play-off Final in Rabat as “a moment of profound sadness for Nigerian football.”
“We openly and sincerely apologise to His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (GCFR), the Federal Government, and to millions of Nigerians, especially our passionate football fans, following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify,” the federation wrote.
The NFF admitted that missing the World Cup for the second consecutive tournament was a catastrophic blow for a country where the Super Eagles stand as a symbol of unity, pride, and shared identity.
“We understand the expectations Nigerians rightly hold,” the statement continued.
“We recognise that our collective effort did not deliver the outcome this nation deserved.”
But beyond the apology, many Nigerians believe the federation’s leadership, the technical crew, and even some players should take responsibility by stepping down. Fans online argued that a mere apology is insufficient after what they describe as one of the darkest chapters in recent football history.
Analysts have echoed the sentiment, insisting that failure of this magnitude — after months of poor form, internal disorganisation, and tactical instability — is reason enough for heads to roll.
Yet, the NFF statement made no mention of resignation, restructuring, or administrative accountability, leaving supporters frustrated.
With Nigeria once again absent from the world’s biggest football stage, pressure continues to mount on the federation to not only accept blame but act decisively — beginning with leadership changes that many believe are long overdue.
