No Excuses: The Father Who Outperformed His Son At University

WHEN I was an undergraduate at the University of Ibadan, I had some friends studying Law at the same university. I studied Communication and Language Arts for my first degree.

One of my Law friends shared an interesting story about two students in his class—a father and his son. Both were studying Law at the University of Ibadan and were in the same class.

The most intriguing part of the story was that the father was on a Second Class Upper, while the son was on a Second Class Lower. Despite being in the same class, studying the same course, the father outperformed his son.

At the time, it seemed like a mystery to us. The father obviously had many responsibilities and concerns. Juggling the roles of a father and a student could not have been easy. Yet, despite the challenges and obstacles before him, he persevered.

He had every reason not to register for the course, yet he did. He had many excuses to justify lower grades, yet he put in his best and ranked among the top students.

He embraced the challenge before him. He didn’t just push—he gave it his all and achieved his goal.

So, what is your excuse? What challenges seem insurmountable to you? Brace yourself and face them head-on. Do not shrink in the face of adversity. After all, don’t they say, ‘Where there is a will, there is a way?’

Let nothing stop you. Do not give in to mediocrity; do not settle for less. It’s never too late to start. Rise—let’s move those mountains!
