Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting
The news making the round that the gunmen, who massacred no fewer than 40 worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo last Sunday, have been arrested is not true.
Stonix News gathered that indigenes and residents of the ancient Owo kingdom, in their hundreds, besieged the palace of the Olowo, Oba Ajibade Ogunoye, to confirm the news of the purported arrest of the gunmen.
It was learnt that the rumours of the arrest of the murderers had filtered in and residents, who have been mourning the loss of their loved ones to the heinous crime, rushed to the palace to catch a glimpse of the marauders.
There are also viral video footages on the social media suggesting that the gunmen, who carried out the massacre, had been arrested with many people calling for their summary execution.
But speaking in Owo dialect after sighting a huge crowd at his palace, Oba Ogunoye urged his subjects to remain calm and law-abiding.
He said he was inundated with the same unconfirmed news of the arrest just like the public, too.
Similarly, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Ondo Police Command, Mrs Funmilayo Odunlami, when contacted, simply retorted: “I’m not aware.”
Stonix News, however, gathered that the viral videos were those of some criminal suspects that were arrested along Owo/Benin boundry with some dangerous weapons.
