ABUJA, Nigeria – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has issued a strong caution to a group known as the “Take It Back Movement” over its planned nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, 7 April 2025.
The date coincides with the newly-declared National Police Day, prompting concerns about the motive and timing of the protest.
According to a press release signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police are not opposed to the constitutional right of citizens to peaceful assembly. However, the Force expressed deep reservations about the protest being held on the same day set aside to celebrate the resilience and dedication of police officers nationwide.
“The Nigeria Police Force is deeply concerned about the motive behind such protest scheduled on the same day the contributions of the Nigeria Police Force to national security is to be celebrated,” the statement reads. “Such a glamorous event would bring together dignitaries from all spheres of life both internationally and within the country, including Foreign Inspector-Generals of Police and Diplomats.”
The NPF noted that the Federal Government has taken a significant step in aligning with international best practices by declaring every 7th April as National Police Day.
As such, the Force described the protest as a potentially “deliberate attempt and unpatriotic act” capable of tarnishing the image of the Nigeria Police and the country at large.
The police urged the protest organisers to reconsider their plans, describing the action as “ill-timed and mischievous.”
“The Nigeria Police Force hereby advises the organisers to shelve this planned protest…,” Adejobi added.
The statement further reaffirmed the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun’s commitment to upholding the law and respecting citizens’ rights.
However, the Force encouraged those with grievances to seek redress through appropriate governmental channels.
“All the organisers of the planned protest as well as individuals who intend to join the protest [are urged] to pursue dialogue by engaging the proper institution of government to press home their demands,” the statement concluded.
As the country prepares to observe its inaugural National Police Day, the NPF maintains that cooperation and respect for national institutions remain essential to national unity and security.
