IN the first quarter of 2025, Nigeria witnessed a staggering toll of violence, with Borno State recording the highest number of reported killings at 515, according to data compiled by SBM Intelligence and media sources, and published by TheCable Index.

The figures represent fatalities from a range of violent incidents including terrorist attacks, Boko Haram raids, armed robbery, abductions, and gang clashes.

Zamfara followed closely behind Borno with 408 deaths, while Katsina recorded 155.

Other states with disturbingly high numbers include Benue (101), Niger (68), and Anambra (63).

Southern states were not spared. Edo (60), Ondo (59), and Imo (47) experienced significant unrest, while Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory recorded 26 and 25 deaths, respectively.

Even states historically considered more peaceful, like Gombe, Ekiti, and Enugu, reported at least one or two fatalities, underlining the widespread nature of insecurity across the federation.

Observers say the figures reveal a persistent and nationwide crisis of violence, with both rural and urban areas affected.

The North-East continues to bear the brunt, largely due to the prolonged Boko Haram insurgency, while other regions grapple with banditry, cultism, and separatist tensions.

In spite of concerted kinetic efforts by security forces to guard the country, analysts are calling for urgent, coordinated action by federal and state governments to stem the bloodshed and restore public confidence in the nation’s security apparatus.
