DELTA: Industrial action at the Federal University of Petroleum Resources (FUPRE), Effurun, has been suspended following a resolution reached between the university management and members of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Warri Zone.
The unions had embarked on a picketing exercise at the institution to demand the payment of Earned Allowances and recognition of their members’ rights.

However, after what has been described as “robust and constructive dialogue”, both sides reached a compromise.
PENGASSAN Chairman at FUPRE, Mr Francis Falodun, confirmed the suspension of the protest, stating that the union opted to stand down in order to protect students from academic disruption.
He explained that one of the key outcomes of the meeting was the university’s commitment to pay the owed Earned Allowance within seven days.

In addition, management assured the unions that no disciplinary action would be taken against any member who took part in the protest.
Speaking on the demand for formal union recognition, Mr Falodun noted that discussions are ongoing, but added that the university has pledged to foster a more cooperative relationship with union members moving forward.
“We appreciate the strength and unity our members have shown throughout this process. Their determination made the difference,” he said.
Celebrations broke out at the university premises as union members welcomed the outcome as a victory for organised labour and a step towards fairer treatment within the institution.
