In a dramatic reversal following intense criticism from within the Urhobo nation, the Urhobo Progress Union (UPU) has formally withdrawn its petition seeking the termination of the pipeline surveillance contract awarded to Tantita Security Services Nigeria Ltd (TSSNL) in Urhobo territory.
The apex socio-cultural body had earlier petitioned the office of the National Security Adviser (NSA), questioning Tantita’s role in the protection of oil assets in Urhobo land. However, the move was met with swift backlash from Urhobo youths and community leaders who accused the UPU of acting without broad consultation.
In a statement issued on Monday, July 7, 2025, and signed by UPU President-General, Ese Gam, alongside three other executives, the body announced the withdrawal of its petition and a resolution of issues with the security firm.
Titled “Withdrawal of Earlier Letter and Resolution of Issues Related to Tantita Security Operations in Urhobo Land”, the letter, which was published in a national daily on Tuesday, clarified the reasons behind the shift in stance.
“The information available to us at the time of writing the initial letter has since changed,” the statement read in part. “Based on updated insights and a broader understanding of the situation, we have engaged in constructive dialogue with Tantita Security Services in an effort to amicably resolve the issues previously raised.”
The UPU added: “In light of this development, we hereby formally withdraw our earlier letter dated 2nd June, which was acknowledged on 24th June by Mr. Isah Haruna.”
The organisation also expressed gratitude to the NSA for his understanding and support: “We appreciate your attention to this matter and thank you for your continued support and commitment to peace and security in our region.”
The withdrawal is seen as a potential turning point in the relationship between the UPU and Tantita, potentially opening the door for renewed cooperation in the ongoing efforts to safeguard oil infrastructure across Urhobo communities.
