We Need A Dictator Like Lee Kuan Yew To Develop Nigeria – Uduaghan

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

It will take a benevolent dictator like Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore for Nigeria to thrive and be developed as expected.
This is the candid view of the immediate past governor of Delta State, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan, while speaking at the NUJ Warri Correspondents’ Chapel Press Week Lecture/Award Ceremony on Wednesday in Warri, Delta State.
Speaking to the topic: “2023 Elections: The Role of the Media,” Uduaghan said the media in Nigeria was enjoying more freedom than it did during military juntas.
“The media has enjoyed more freedom than they did in the military regime.
“The media helped in bringing democracy to what it is today. Social Media is much more dangerous than the traditional media.
“Sometimes we don’t appreciate the kind of freedom that the media have in this country,” he noted.
The two-term governor of Delta from 2007 to 2015 said making reference to Singapore’s developmental experience was as good as endorsing the visioner and nationalist, Lee Kuan Yew, as a dictator.
“People are always talking about Singapore and how developed it is; they are always talking about how Le Kuan Yew developed Singapore.
“If you read the history of Singapore, you will realize that Lee Kuan Yew was a dictator.
“You need some dictatorship for a society to thrive and develop. He did not give the press the kind of freedom we are enjoying here today.
“So, when you’re saying we should develop like Singapore, we need a leader like Lee Kuan Yew who was a dictator.
“Dictatorship is not bad, dictatorship brings discipline.
“You need some form of dictatorship for a nation to develop to some extent,” Uduaghan averred.
