PRESIDENT Bola Tinubu has relieved General Christopher Musa of his duties as Chief of Defence Staff and approved the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as his successor, in what sources describe as a significant shake-up within Nigeria’s military hierarchy.

A statement issued by the State House on Friday confirmed that the president also approved new appointments across the Armed Forces. Major-General W. Shaibu becomes the Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke takes over as Chief of Air Staff, while Rear Admiral I. Abbas has been named Chief of Naval Staff.
Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye, the Chief of Defence Intelligence, retains his position.
President Tinubu expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs for their “patriotic service and dedicated leadership,” urging the newly appointed officers to “justify the confidence reposed in them” through professionalism, unity, and unwavering commitment to national security.
According to the statement, signed by Mr. Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, the appointments take immediate effect.
Observers believe this move signals President Tinubu’s renewed focus on strengthening the command structure of the Armed Forces and aligning the nation’s defence strategy with his broader security agenda.
