Edo Gov Supports Families Of Fallen Workers, Donates Vehicles To Correctional Service

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

EDO State governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has presented cheques to 47 families of deceased state workers and awarded educational scholarships to one beneficiary from each family.

The presentation ceremony, held at Government House, Benin City, marked another milestone in the state’s implementation of the Group Life Insurance Scheme in partnership with Tangerine Life Insurance.

Addressing the beneficiaries, Governor Okpebholo said the gesture was driven by compassion and a duty to support families who lost their loved ones while serving the state.

“It is not just about insurance; it is about kindness,” he stated. “The most important thing is that you receive your entitlements following the painful loss you have suffered. Today, we are also supporting you with scholarships for one member of each family. This is our way of ensuring you are not left behind.”

He commended Tangerine Life Insurance for its efficiency and partnership, noting that Edo State has become one of the leading states in Nigeria in the implementation of pension and insurance reforms.

Managing Director/Chief Executive of Tangerine Life Insurance, Mr Kehinde Borisade, applauded the Governor for transforming Edo State into a model of pension reform and workers’ welfare.

“In implementing the Pension and Insurance Acts, Edo State stands out as one of the leading states, if not the leading state,” he said.

He disclosed that Tangerine Life has paid benefits totalling over ₦200 million to 47 families this year alone, thanks to the Governor’s commitment to workers’ welfare.

In a related development, Governor Okpebholo also inaugurated five new vehicles donated to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Edo Command, to support the efficient conveyance of suspects and defendants to court.

Inaugurating the vehicles, he remarked: “If inmates cannot get to court, they cannot get justice. That is why we responded promptly. The correctional centre belongs to all of us, and governance must protect the rights of every individual.”

The vehicles were received by the Controller, Sunday Oyakhire, who expressed appreciation on behalf of the Correctional Service and the Controller-General.

The Governor’s engagements emphasised his administration’s commitment to social welfare, compassion, and strengthening institutions that serve the people of Edo State.
