NO fewer than four people have been confirmed dead while three others sustained serious injuries after an articulated lorry crashed near the Second Niger Bridge in Delta State on Monday.
The injured victims were rushed to St Rebecca’s Hospital, close to Mammy Market, for urgent medical attention.
Confirming the incident, the Delta State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Frederick Ogidan, attributed the crash to excessive speeding on the part of the truck driver.
“Four persons have been confirmed dead. The vehicle involved is not a Dangote truck but a BUA cement truck. Unfortunately, the crash occurred on a very good section of the road, which suggests the driver was speeding and lost control,” Ogidan said.
However, eyewitnesses claimed the accident involved the cement truck and two other vehicles.
“We saw the truck speeding while trying to navigate the bridge but the driver lost control and it eventually overturned.
It crushed two other vehicles, killing many and injuring others who were later rushed to St Rebecca’s Hospital along Nnebisi Road in Asaba,” an eyewitness recounted.
