Mixed Reactions Trail Electricity Tariff Hike In Delta

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

MIXED reactions have trailed the hike in electricity tariff in Delta State as some respondents welcomed the development, while others felt it is an additional burden on Nigerians taken too far.

“I am Comrade.Olomowo Tega. The increment in the electricity tariff is a welcome development provided there is a constant electricity supply. There has been constant light in my area here in Ughelli.

“We have been having constant light for the past three days. Now, we have light right hours in the day and eight in the night. Before now, For my two-bedroom apartment, I used to pay the sum of N2000 monthly for electricity tariffs but now, I pay N3000 monthly,” he noted.

Another respondent, Edesiri Agiyiri, believes politics has gotten the better part of electricity generation and distribution in the country.

“My name is Edesiri Agiyiri. The issue of light is being played like politics. I don’t know why somebody will pay the electricity bill and not see light for weeks and even months.

“Some of the politicians pay for electricity in some communities and villages but we have not seen what they paid for.

“My community, Oviri-Okpe pays N2000 per line every month but we don’t see the light. We have a House of Representatives Member who pays for this bill for the whole of the village after paying, we won’t see light.

“Now, the light bill is N3500 per line and this House of Representatives member, Barr Ben Etanabene has paid millions of naira, yet no light.

“When the month ends, if you see the way BEDC officials used to come for the bill, you will think the light is constant. He paid this year’s light bill in October but since that October, we have not seen light,” he concluded.

“My name is Wilfred Okotie, I’m a businessman, from Okpe Local Government Area. Though the electricity tariff was increased, we have not seen light. The increment in the tariff is too much because they are not being constant with the light.

“The amount I was paying before for my two bedrooms was N7000 per month. Now, we pay N12000 per month. Since we pay the bill, I have not seen light and the thing is telling on me. There have been blackout of the past three weeks,” another respondent retorted.
