Omafuaire Emerges Victorious In NUJ Warri Chairmanship Election


CHIEF Akpokona Omafuaire Esq, the Vanguard Newspaper Correspondent in Warri, Delta State, has been elected as the new Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Warri Correspondents’ Chapel.

The election, which held on Monday, saw Omafuaire secure a decisive victory with 17 votes, defeating his closest rival, Comrade Okpare Theophilus Onojeghen, who polled 13 votes.

For the post of the secretary contested by Comrade Edeki Igafe and Comrade EloOghene Edremoda, both contestants had a tie of 15 votes each.

Declaring the results, the Delta State Council Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, confirmed Omafuaire as the winner.

As regards the post of the secretary, he said the newly-elected chairman would conduct a bye-election in line with the constitutional provisions of the NUJ.

He was flanked by the State Acting Secretary of the Union, Comrade Josephine Omodior, who administered the oath of office on the newly-elected chairman and members of his cabinet, all of whom had been returned unopposed.

Also present at the election were the State Auditor, Celestine Afokoba, among other officials.

In his acceptance speech, Comrade Akpokona Omafuaire expressed gratitude to members of the union for conducting themselves peacefully throughout the electoral process.

He assured them that the welfare of members would be a top priority under his leadership.

Addressing members after the declaration of results, Comrade Churchill Oyowe urged all journalists in the chapel to set aside any differences that may have arisen before and during the election, emphasising the need for unity and progress in the union.
