Wike Seeks Stronger Media Partnership, Urges Professionalism Amid Political Tensions

THE Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has commended DAAR Communications for its continued support to the FCT Administration, while calling for enhanced collaboration and professionalism in media practice.

Wike made the remarks in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the management team of DAAR Communications, noting that the organisation was the first media outfit to formally engage his administration in such a manner.

“On behalf of the FCT administration and residents of Abuja, I sincerely thank you for this visit. You are the first media outfit that has paid us a courtesy call, and we deeply appreciate your support,” he said.

The minister acknowledged the role of the media organisation in addressing issues concerning the administration, particularly during challenging periods, adding that it had remained responsive in clarifying key developments.

On a pending land-related issue raised during the visit, Wike disclosed that he had directed the relevant authorities to ensure its prompt resolution, stressing the need to avoid bureaucratic delays.

“I have already minuted it to ensure urgent resolution. It must not be handled in the usual civil service manner,” he stated.

Wike also expressed the administration’s readiness to partner with DAAR Communications on ambitious media and developmental projects, describing such initiatives as potentially groundbreaking within Nigeria’s media landscape.

However, he cautioned media organisations against partisanship, especially in the current political climate, urging journalists to prioritise accuracy, fact-checking and balanced reporting.

“We are in a political period, and the media must strive to be non-partisan. Reporters must verify facts before publishing,” he said.

Defending the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against recent criticisms, Wike argued that many issues attributed to the electoral body were rooted in internal conflicts among political actors.

“If you follow the scenario, you will know there is nothing to hold INEC responsible for. Politicians must put their houses in order,” he added.

The minister further decried what he described as misrepresentation of political realities, particularly the continued reference to “factions” despite court rulings resolving such disputes. He stressed the importance of respecting judicial decisions in a democratic system.

Wike also warned against the spread of misinformation, especially on social media, recounting a recent incident involving false reports of his resignation which caused widespread confusion.

“People began calling from everywhere because of fake news. We must be careful in this era where anything can spread rapidly,” he said.

Highlighting his commitment to staying informed, the minister revealed that he regularly monitors major broadcasters, including African Independent Television (AIT), Channels Television and TVC News.

Reaffirming his willingness to collaborate, Wike assured DAAR Communications of the FCT Administration’s support in promoting accurate information and enhancing the image of the nation’s capital.

“I will continue to partner with you. Together, we can promote the image of the Federal Capital Territory,” he concluded.
