SCORES of students resident at the Awolowo Hall, University of Ibadan, on Saturday morning, lost their valuables to an early morning raid by suspected armed robbers.
The hoodlums were said to have stolen into the hall of residence largely occupied by females brandishing weapons to frighten the students.
Valuables worth thousands of naira carted away by the marauders included a potpourri of mobile phones, jewellery, expensive clothing, wrists watches, and laptops among others.
Report says some of the affected students who braced up against the marauders were tortured.
The security team was alerted by the clangorous screams of the affected students before its arrival.
Stonix News, however, gathered that some of the suspects have been arrested and handed over to the police at Sango Police Station.
It was also gathered that a manhunt has been launched for other fleeing suspects.
Amid further sketchy details, the Public Relations Officer of the University of Ibadan, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, confirmed that reports from the hall wardens indicated that the robbers made off with the students’ mobile telephone handsets.
The Oyo State Command’s Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Adewale Osifeso, hasn’t reacted to the incident.
Meanwhile, The UI management has beefed up security following Saturday’s robbery at Awo Hall.
The university’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs Joke Akinpelu, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the incident occurred at the hall of residence during the early hours of Saturday.
Akinpelu said the thief entered only two rooms and stole two mobile phones.
According to her, the victims unsuspectingly left their doors open to either use the toilet or wash plates when the thief followed them in to pick up their phones.
“The thief asked whether they had laptops, but they said no, and when an alarm was raised, he fled,” she said.
The spokesperson said the police had been informed and were investigating the case.
