Atiku Calls for Probe Into Natasha’s Allegations Against Akpabio

FORMER Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed deep concern over the allegations of sexual harassment, intimidation, and mistreatment levelled against Senate President Godswill Akpabio by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

In a statement shared on his Facebook page, Atiku described the claims as “grave” and called for a “thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.”

“The Nigerian Senate represents the voice of the people. Those who serve in it — especially its leadership — must uphold the highest standards of integrity, dignity, and respect,” he stated.

Akpoti-Uduaghan’s allegations have sparked widespread debate, with many Nigerians demanding accountability from the Senate President. Atiku emphasised that as the third most powerful figure in the country, Akpabio should “embody unimpeachable character.”

He warned that sexual harassment in the workplace remains a major obstacle to women’s progress and should never be ignored, especially when it involves a highly influential public officer.

“As the chief presiding officer of the Upper Chamber, the Senate President has a duty to champion the protection and empowerment of Nigerian women through legislation — not to be the subject of allegations that undermine those very principles,” Atiku said.

He urged President Bola Tinubu and the Senate to take the allegations seriously, stressing that the response to this case would reflect Nigeria’s commitment to justice, accountability, and gender inclusion in governance.

“With only four women currently serving in the Senate, it is imperative that we foster an environment where female legislators can serve without fear of harassment or intimidation,” he added.

Atiku concluded by calling for “careful and principled action” to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s institutions and ensure that all citizens, regardless of gender, are treated with dignity and respect.
