ABUJA — Former President Goodluck Jonathan has announced that he will embark on widespread consultations regarding a possible run in the 2027 presidential election.
The former leader made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja, shortly after a group of supporters marched to his office, urging him to throw his hat into the ring.
Speaking to the crowd, which he noted was made up largely of young people, Jonathan emphasised the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections.
“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation, take the money to anywhere to enjoy their life. So you must be patriotic. And things are very, very clear,” he said.
Jonathan stressed that peace remains the key ingredient Nigeria urgently needs, adding that young people must continue to advocate for peaceful and credible elections.
“If we don’t have peaceful and credible elections, most good citizens will not want to bother getting involved in politics,” he warned.
The former President also drew on his extensive experience observing elections across Africa, noting that he has monitored polls in fourteen or more countries, some on multiple occasions.
However, he sought to temper expectations around any immediate decision on his candidacy.
“Presidential race is not a computer game,” Jonathan said plainly. “But I heard you, and I will consult widely.”
He ended by encouraging Nigerian youths to remain fully involved in the electoral process, particularly exercising their right to vote, with a focus on building a nation that future grandchildren can be proud of.
Neither a timeline for his consultations nor a firm date for any formal announcement has been given.
Stonix News will continue to monitor developments as the 2027 election cycle begins to take shape.
