How Officers Assisted Stranded Family, Declined Monetary Appreciation In Edo

By Micheal Chukwuebuka

THE Nigeria Police Force has received commendation after officers from Okada Division, Edo State, came to the aid of travellers stranded on the Benin–Ore Expressway on Sunday, 24 August 2025.

According to eyewitness Peter Okey Mbuba, the incident occurred at about 2:35 p.m. when his vehicle suffered a burst tyre a few kilometres from Okada. While attempting to replace the damaged tyre, his jack malfunctioned, leaving him and his companions vulnerable in what he described as a “very lonely part of the expressway.”

In the midst of the difficulty, a police patrol van arrived. The officers, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP John Obatoyinbo, immediately offered assistance. Using their own tools, they helped fix the vehicle and remained with the travellers until they were safely back on the road.

Mr. Mbuba said the officers further warned them that the location was considered dangerous. He noted that the most surprising aspect was the team’s refusal to accept monetary appreciation for their efforts.

“The men of Okada Division in Edo State are a rare bunch of policemen,” Mbuba stated. “The DPO, CSP John Obatoyinbo, who led this team, was so humble and kind. They showed me today that we still have decent and noble policemen in Nigeria.”

The account has drawn attention online, with many Nigerians applauding the professionalism and humanity displayed by the officers.
