The Federal Government met with the Acting High Commissioner of South Africa this Monday, citing disturbing videos and the deaths of Nigerians on the 21st April, 2026, Nnaemeka Ekpeyong and days later on 25th April, Kelvin Amaramiro, who died while in the custody of South African Security Forces.
While briefing journalists, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Nigeria demands thorough investigation, autopsy reports, and protection for its citizens.
On a diplomatic front, Nigeria also called for the speedy activation of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the Early Warning Mechanism, essentially a hotline to de-escalate threats before they turn deadly.
South Africa promises to resolve the crisis, saying it does not back the protests.
