Police Declare Manhunt For Chief, Gang Over Killing Of Three Youths In Asaba

Rita Enemuru, Reporting

THE Delta State Police Command has launched a sweeping manhunt for Chief Jerry Nkeeshe, the Owelle of Onicha-Olona, and all members of an armed group allegedly responsible for the brutal killing of three youths in Asaba on Monday.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, said the chief allegedly led a team comprising vigilantes and suspected cult members, some reportedly dressed in Army camouflage, to a disputed parcel of land at Okwe community along the Asaba–Onitsha Road.

The group was said to have attempted to enforce an unauthorised quit notice on the land, “without any court order”, a move that sparked resistance from local youths.

The confrontation escalated when the armed men allegedly opened fire, inflicting gunshot wounds on three young men who later died in hospital.

In swift reaction, the Commissioner of Police, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda, ordered the deployment of tactical units, intelligence operatives, and specialised investigators to track down everyone involved in the attack.

“This unprovoked and reckless display of lawlessness will not be tolerated under any guise,” the CP said, condemning the killings as unacceptable and criminal.

He urged residents of Onicha-Olona, Asaba, and neighbouring communities to cooperate with the police by providing credible information that may aid the arrests.

“No individual, irrespective of title or influence, is above the law. We will ensure every perpetrator faces justice,” he assured.

The Command further disclosed that normalcy has been restored in the area following enhanced surveillance, intelligence-driven patrols, and coordinated search operations aimed at preventing further unrest.

Members of the public with relevant information about the whereabouts of the suspects are encouraged to contact the Command via its emergency line: 08036684974.

The Delta State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state.
