A woman and an eight-month-old baby girl have died, while several others, including a driver and his conductor, were injured in a horrific crash near the Anthony bus stop on the Ikorodu Expressway on Sunday.
The fatal incident occurred when a speeding red Tata commercial bus, travelling from Palmgroove towards Anthony, reportedly lost control.
It skidded, crashed through the central reservation, and ploughed into an oncoming Volkswagen commercial bus (commonly called a Vanagon in Lagos).
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed the collision in a statement from its spokesperson, Adebayo Taofiq.
The agency stated the accident happened opposite Olabode House, after Anthony and before Obanikoro.
LASTMA’s preliminary report indicates the Tata bus was “propelled at an excessive and perilous velocity” before the catastrophic loss of control.
The violent impact killed the adult female passenger instantly, while the infant tragically succumbed to her injuries.
“In total, ten victims, including the drivers of both vehicles, were successfully extricated from the mangled wreckage, all sustaining varying degrees of serious injuries,” the statement noted.
Six were rescued from the Volkswagen and four from the Tata bus.
LASTMA personnel swiftly cordoned off the scene to prevent further accidents and cleared the wreckage to restore traffic flow.
The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals by the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), while the bodies of the deceased were respectfully recovered by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU).
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his deepest condolences, with particular sympathy for the infant’s mother, who was also seriously injured and is now receiving treatment.
He described the event as a collective moment of grief.
Bakare-Oki used the occasion to issue a stern warning to all motorists, especially commercial drivers, urging utmost caution, adherence to speed limits, and routine vehicle safety checks—particularly of brakes.
He emphasised that recklessness on the roads has irreversible and devastating consequences.
