Three Lagos University Students Killed In Multi-Vehicle Collision

Ola ‘Kiya, Reporting

IKORODU – A tragic multi-vehicle accident in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State on Saturday, 8th November 2025, has claimed the lives of three students from the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH).

The collision, which occurred at Powerline Junction, involved an unregistered tipper truck laden with sand, a Toyota Corolla, an MPV bus, and four tricycles.

According to a statement from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), preliminary investigations indicate the tipper truck was travelling at excessive speed when it suffered a mechanical brake failure. The driver lost control, causing the vehicle to careen into other road users.

In a swift response, LASTMA operatives were dispatched to the scene. They were joined by officials from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Shagamu Police Division. Together, the emergency services conducted a rescue operation.

Seven critically injured people, including tricycle operators, were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. The three deceased students – two male and one female – were evacuated and their bodies have been deposited at the General Hospital, Ikorodu, mortuary.

Following the rescue efforts, the wrecked vehicles were removed from the road to restore the flow of traffic.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed his profound grief and extended heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased students.

Mr. Bakare-Oki lamented that the incident was “entirely avoidable,” citing the recurring problems of recklessness, speeding, and poor vehicle maintenance—particularly defective brakes—as persistent causes of fatal road accidents in the state.

He issued a stern warning to all commercial and heavy-duty vehicle operators, urging them to adhere to speed limits, undergo regular mechanical checks, and uphold the highest standards of road discipline to prevent further loss of life.
