A Call To Overcome – Reflections From Day Two Of The RCCG Annual Convention 2025

On Tuesday, 5th August 2025, the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) held a stirring Welcome Service that sought to inspire and challenge attendees with a powerful message on The Gathering of Overcomers.

Delivered by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the sermon drew deeply from 1 John 4:4 to categorise believers into three groups: ex-champions, potential champions, and reigning champions.

Pastor Adeboye emphasised that “anyone who will be an overcomer must be of God,” underscoring the spiritual identity of the faithful as “little children in the hands of God.”

The core of his message pivoted on the struggle between the earthly and the divine within us — “a dangerous composition,” he said, referencing Genesis 2:7.

The earthly dust seeks to drag us down, while the Spirit of God strives to lift us upwards. “Don’t let the world drag you down,” he admonished.

The minister highlighted the rigours of the champion’s path: “The life of the overcomer is a life of sacrifice—constant discipline. It takes more effort to remain a champion than to become one.”

He reassured the congregation that God is “not against enjoyment,” quoting Proverbs, but cautioned against overindulgence.

“The flesh does not want you to overcome,” he said plainly.

A stark warning was given to those who may have faltered or lost their way— the “ex-champions.” Drawing on biblical examples such as Esau, Gehazi, and Judas Iscariot, Pastor Adeboye posed the sobering question: “How far will you go to make money?”

He urged believers not to “become a loser for what the world can offer,” reminding that “it doesn’t pay to backslide.”

Conversely, the message celebrated the steadfastness of the reigning champions—Elisha and Peter—whose lives exemplify faithfulness and surrender.

Elisha, who “left the world behind to pursue God,” and Peter, who “willingly left everything behind to follow Jesus,” were held up as models to emulate.

The call to action was clear: “If you would take your eyes off the world and put your gaze on God, you can become an overcomer again.”

The minister offered hope and restoration, declaring, “In the Name that is above every other name… God will restore you today.”

In closing, the congregation was led in prayer for strength and perseverance: “Father, because of Your power in me, for the rest of my life, let me remain an overcomer.”

This compelling message resonates beyond the walls of the convention, inviting all to reflect on their spiritual journey amid the challenges of the world.

It is a timely reminder that true victory lies not in fleeting worldly gains, but in steadfast faith and dedication to God.
