THE Catholic Diocese of Kontagora has condemned the horrifying attack on St Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger State, where armed men abducted pupils, students and teachers in the early hours of Friday.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Diocesan Secretary, Fr Jatau Luka Joseph, the attackers stormed the school between 1:00 a.m. and 3:00 a.m., whisking away an unspecified number of children and staff.

A security officer on duty was also reportedly shot during the invasion.

The Diocese expressed deep concern for the safety of the abducted victims, describing the incident as one that has thrown the school community into fear and distress.

Fr Joseph said security agencies were immediately alerted and have since begun coordinated operations to secure the safe release of the victims.

He noted that the Bishop of Kontagora is actively engaging security operatives, community leaders and government authorities to ensure urgent action.

The Diocese appealed to the public to remain calm and to cooperate with security efforts while continuing to pray for the “safe and quick return” of the abducted persons.

It reaffirmed its commitment to protecting children and promised to release verified updates as more information becomes available.

“May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect His people from all danger,” the statement added.

Security authorities are yet to provide an official figure of those abducted as rescue operations intensify.

Stonix News reports that the abduction is coming barely a week after about 25 students and 30 worshippers were abducted at Maga and Eruku in Kebbi and Kwara states respectively.
