Chevron, NUJ Equip Journalists With AI Skills To Navigate Digital Age

CHEVRON Nigeria Limited, in partnership with the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has organised a one-day media capacity-building programme for journalists, focusing on Harnessing Artificial Intelligence in Journalism.

The training, held in Abuja on Tuesday, brought together journalists from various media platforms to explore the impact of emerging technologies—especially Artificial Intelligence (AI)—on modern journalism.

In his remarks, Mr Olusoga Oduselu, General Manager, Policy, Government and Public Affairs, Chevron Nigeria Limited, represented by Victor Anyaegbudike, Manager, Communications, reaffirmed Chevron’s commitment to human capital development and ethical media practice.

“Chevron Nigeria believes in the value derivable from developing human capital. Through programmes like this and our AWARES initiative with Pan-Atlantic University, we’ve trained over 120 journalists since 2014,” Oduselu stated.

He emphasised the strategic role of the media as agenda-setters and opinion moulders, commending journalists for their continued reporting on complex issues within the oil and gas industry. He also noted Chevron’s extensive support for sustainable development, citing the company’s investments in Nigerian Content, community development through Host Community Development Trusts (HCDTs), and efforts to reduce carbon emissions and gas flaring.

Also speaking at the event, Chairman of NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, underscored the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence in journalism.

“AI is no longer a distant concept but a powerful tool reshaping how we gather, verify, and deliver news. From fact-checking to personalised content delivery, AI helps us do more, faster and more accurately,” she said.

She highlighted the role of AI in combating misinformation, enhancing audience engagement, and improving efficiency through tools such as automated transcription and data analysis. However, she cautioned that the use of AI must be ethical and transparent.

“As we adopt these technologies, we must uphold core journalistic values—truthfulness, accuracy, authenticity, and ethical responsibility,” she added.

The NUJ Chair lauded Chevron Nigeria for sponsoring the training, describing it as a critical investment in equipping journalists to responsibly navigate the evolving digital media landscape.

Participants were taken through sessions on AI tools for journalism, ethical considerations in automated reporting, and practical demonstrations of AI-assisted newsgathering.

The training is part of Chevron Nigeria’s broader efforts to build strong partnerships with the media and foster responsible, innovative journalism that supports democracy and public accountability.
