Four Months After, Police Say: ‘We’re Still Looking For Deborah’s Killers

Muhammed Abubakar, Reporting

FOUR months and still counting, Sokoto State Police Command has said they are still looking for the killers of Deborah Samuel Yakubu.

Deborah was a student of the Shehu Shagari College of Education, Sokoto, who was cruelly #murdered on the spurious allegation of blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

Stonix News reports that the 23-year-old was stoned and burnt to death in May 12, 2022 by angry #Islamic #extremists comprising fellow students of the college and hoodlums from the outside the campus.

She was a second-year Christian college student.

Curiously, the Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Sanusi Abubakar, in a chat in Sokoto at the weekend, said that those arrested by the police were not the prime suspects.

“But they were among those who organised the violent riot in the college.

“Those ones we arrested then, though not the suspected killers, contributed to the violent riot and were arraigned in court where the judge ordered that they should be remanded.

“Concerning those suspected killers, we have circulated their pictures to media houses and sent our intelligence to every part of the state.

“We are still on the lookout for them and we are confident of arresting them wherever they may be hiding.

“We will flush them out and arraign them before a competent court of law, ‘ he added.

He said those arrested were still in custody as directed by the court, while the killers were still at large.

He, however, added that efforts are being intensified to arrest the prime suspects .

He insisted that the police would not be biased in the case, saying the state Commissioner of Police, Muhammed Gumel, would ensure that justice is done.

Meanwhile, the United States (US) has recently honoured the late Deborah Samuel, who was murdered by irate Islamic youths over alleged blasphemy in Sokoto State in May 2022.

The honour was part of the activities to mark 2022 year’s International Day Commemorating the Victims of Violence Based on Religion or Belief by the US Department of State (Ministry of Foreign Affairs), on Monday.

The deceased picture was uploaded to the Office of International Religious Freedom, a body saddled with the responsibility of promoting universal respect for freedom of religion or belief across the world.
