DELTA State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has directed the immediate payment of the newly approved minimum wage to state workers, effective from October 2024.

The meeting was convened to discuss the implementation of the new wage structure.

According to Emu, Governor Oborevwori instructed the immediate payment following the recent receipt of the salary adjustment chart from the National Income, Salaries, and Wages Commission.

The governor, described as labor-friendly, was determined to implement the new wage despite ongoing evaluations of its impact on the state’s finances.

“The governor has directed us to begin payment, even though we are still assessing the implications on the state’s cash flow. His decision reflects his empathy towards workers’ challenges,” Emu said.

In response, NLC Chairman, Comrade Goodluck Ofobruku, praised the governor for his swift action, acknowledging that the governor’s commitment had eased the labor movement’s efforts in the state.

Ofobruku highlighted that Governor Oborevwori had assured labor leaders of prompt payment once the necessary wage charts were received, proving his promise was not mere political rhetoric.

“We appreciate the governor for approving the implementation without putting labor under pressure. He has made the process much easier for us,” Ofobruku said.

Stonix News reports that the yet-to-be-disclosed new minimum wage payment is set to begin immediately, with any discrepancies to be addressed as implementation progresses.

Recall that Kogi and Ogun states just recently announced their new minimum wage of N72,000 and N77,000 respectively.
