HIV-Positive Inmate Passes In Warri Custodial Centre

AN inmate at the Okere Custodial Centre in Warri, identified as David, has passed following complications linked to HIV, despite repeated medical efforts by correctional authorities to manage his condition.

Deputy Comptroller of Prisons, DCP Richard Egbede, who confirmed the incident on Sunday, said the inmate consistently refused to take his antiretroviral drugs, even after several rounds of counselling and support.

“He had access to his medication, but he simply wouldn’t take it,” Egbede explained. “About a month ago, when his condition became critical, we rushed him to the Central Hospital, Warri, where he was treated and discharged. We appealed to him to comply with treatment, but he still refused.”

According to Egbede, David developed a fever days before his death a fortnight ago and was placed on a drip at the custodial centre.

His health deteriorated overnight, prompting his return to hospital the following morning.

“Doctors placed him on oxygen, but sadly, before the test results could come out, he passed away,” Egbede said.

The prison official dismissed rumours circulating on social media that the inmate was neglected, insisting that the custodial centre had done everything possible to care for him.

“If he were alive today, he would testify that we looked after him,” he maintained.

The Nigerian Correctional Service has yet to issue a formal statement beyond Egbede’s confirmation.
